Why Obasanjo handed Bakassi over to Cameroun despite protests by Nigerians — Adoke: Politics : Nigerialog.com - Nigeria's Premier Online Forum
Perhaps Bakassi case is unique in the sense that I cannot recall any other instance whereby a country unilaterally ceded its land and people to the sovereignty of another country. What normally happens is that referendum is conducted so that the people themselves decide their own fate, afterall they are human beings and not just property. When Nigeria and Cameroun exchanged lands in the North (Adamawa) and South (English Cameroon), there was a referendum conducted. In Bakassi case, it was simply handed over. I remember vividly that Gen Sani Abacha simply refused to hand the land over, and actually sent in thousands (some say 10,000) of Nigerian troops to keep the place in Nigeria. Obasanjo ceded it, perhaps, as part of his personal effort to do opposite of everything Abacha did.
