US Calls on Nigeria to Adopt Ranching to End Herdsmen/Farmers Clashes

United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Williams Stuart Symington, yesterday urged Nigerians to adopt ranching of cattle as it is practised in his country to avert the incessant farmers-herdsmen clashes in parts of Nigeria.

The ambassador, who spoke at the weekend when he visited Governor Samuel Ortom in Makurdi, also urged Nigerians to shun all acts that could threaten the unity of the country.

He said he wholly agreed with the position of the governor that cattle owners should resort to ranching as a panacea to the frequent clashes in the country.

“I come from a family of farmers. When I was young, my family used to move our cows from Colorado to Texas for grazing but later the system changed and we practised ranching,” Symington said.

He noted that the strength of Nigeria lies in its unity even as he enjoined Nigerians to emulate the US by always standing together despite obvious diversities, noting that it was by so doing that the country would be positioned for greatness.

Earlier, Ortom said the state had enjoyed tremendous relationship and goodwill from the US government through intervention in the health sector by USAID and others donor foreign agencies, noting that when he assumed office, most of them had packed out of the state but he had to bring them back.

The governor harped on ranching of cows as being practiced in US and other advanced nations, stressing that it was the only way to stop incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen.

I doubt that Buhari's people will listen.
They now believe it is their right to graze cows anywhere they find food, even if that "food" is some farmers crops.
