Law-abiding herdsmen safe in South East, says Miyetti Allah

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has said law-abiding herdsmen are safe in the South East, and that they have no threat whatsoever, as long as they cooperate with their host communities.

Northern Elders Forum (NEF) had recently urged Fulani herdsmen to return to their region, if their security could not be guaranteed in in the southern part of the country.

In a statement by NEF Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the group also told northern governors to commence preparation to receive the Fulani communities reportedly being ejected from South.

However, the apex Igbo organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has denied rumours that any northerners had been given eviction order from Igboland.

Regardless, the group warned against the activities of criminal herders camping in the forests who had posed great danger to their people, particularly farmers, women and girls.

But, in a telephone chat, yesterday, South East MACBAN Chairman, Gidado Siddikki, said no herdsman in the region will face any form of threat as long as the herder played by the rules.

He said: “Before now, we have sensitised our people resident in the South East that they should cooperate with their host communities. Igbo people are good to live with as long as you obey the rules and regulations guiding their ways of life. We have conflict resolution committees in South East states.

The committees have been very helpful, because, they help us resolve issues concerning Fulani herdsmen and their host communities.

“Whenever any herder destroys farmlands of his host community, we pay compensation. On the other hand, whenever any member of the host community kills any of our cows, they will pay compensation. It has been working for us.

“We believe the northern elders issued the statement in good faith. Our members here are law-abiding, and have not been having any problem with their hosts. We know our members.

“They have not been engaging in kidnapping, attacks on farmers, raping of women, and other vices. If we should encourage our members to relocate to the North because of crisis or insecurity, is the North without crisis and insecurity?”

This news article has "Parts" which should be addressed separately.

Yes, it is true (and sensible) to ensure that the herdsmen "cooperate" with the host communities.
The question is, under which legal or operational framework/basis should they do that (ie "cooperate")?

Is it under the basis guided by the "agreement" the governor of Anambra state reached with the herdsmen, whereby they pay N500k for each human life they take?

Even if an autonomous community were to engage with the herders, would the herders obey the COMMUNITY's agreement when they have the governor's "agreement"?

These questions are pertinent, because I once saw a herder in an Abia state community telling a host member that they herdsmen have an agreement with the governor of Abia state which essentially allows them to do whatever they want.

I say these because the governors' agreement are  VOID where lives of Igbo communities are involved, because in Igboland, the tradition is a life for a life. Igbo life has no monetary remedy. The Fulani must understand this.

Are the Fulani willing to hand over a herdsman who committed murder for summary execution by the communities?

That is the question.

NO, it has NOT been working, and I can prove it immediately.
Proof?
IPOB just formed Eastern Security Network, and Igbo people are falling over themselves trying to either join or contribute material support for the outfit.
If Igbo people had confidence in the process you described, we would not have ESN today, and stories of kidnapping, rape, and murders flowing out of South East would have ceased permanently.

The agreement about paying compensation is one reached between the slaving clowns who parade themselves as governors in South East, and you.
It may be working for you and your stooge governor in the South East, but it is NOT working for Ndigbo as a nation.
No serious minded or sane Igbo considers it relevant.

Even the governors are now coming around because they know that the agreement you describe is asinine.
They have just banned your practices of moving cows by foot. It is now left for them to follow up their words with concrete action (A LAW BANNING OPEN GRAZING).

Ndigbo shall sustain the pressure on them until they enact/sign that law.

It is advisable that you listen to your northern elders and call your herders back to the north where there are vast empty lands.
The population of the south is growing and there are no longer free lands where you could carry out your medieval practices of moving cattle by foot.
You must ranch your cattle ANYWHERE you find yourselves in the East, or you move them back north.
Shikena.

Fair point about the North not being impervious to insecurity and crisis, BUT that is why you should be accepting modern practices of ranching of cattle rather than your medieval practices.

Methinks that almost every community in Nigeria would be willing to SELL (where possible) land to herders to use as RANCH. That is the only way it can happen amicably in Nigeria.

RUGA (or any of its mutations) would NEVER be acceptable, at least in the East, because you Fulani have shown your motives. Everybody is awake now.
