Ibrahim Idris, Inspector General of Police.

President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, met behind closed-doors with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris.

The meeting, which took place shortly after the Juma’at prayer session in the State House Mosque, held inside the President’s office in the Villa.

Idris was expected to have retired from service on attainment of the mandatory 35 years in service last Thursday, January 3, but a source yesterday said his fate would be known anytime after the meeting.

“We are optimistic, but all will be known after this meeting,” the source said.

Idris, the country’s 19th IGP, was appointed by Buhari on March 21, 2016 to replace Solomon Arase, who retired from the Force on June 21, same year.

The 59- year old Niger State-born Police officer enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in 1984, after graduating from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture.

Speculations had been rife that at the attainment of his mandatory retirement age of 60 or 35 years of service in the Police on Wednesday, January 3, the President might extend his stay for some period of time, given that the country is on the verge of general elections.

But many Nigerians, including the opposition political parties, have kicked against such move.
