Hazad is a one year old Alsatian that gives me a good exercise at every opportunity it gets. Each time I step into my compound, I always brace myself. He comes charging and it is 'go time' with every bound of his. Sometimes I wonder what happens when he just lays there and ignore me.

So, do you own a dog? Is he active or laid back? How much do you know about your dog and it's past life or its present health? Are you even concerned or you are of the opinion that it does not matter if you don't have time for your dog?

Listen up!! It is the recommendation that if you own a dog, you are obligated to walk him at regular intervals. Expert opinions state that there are plenty of benefits that is associated with dog exercise. According to these experts, these benefits include but are not limited to the following.

Bond strengthening: Since you'll be alone with him, it allows both of you to spend quality time together. According to experts, this time is important in forming a deep and trusting relationship with your dog. The time that you spend together with him also plays a vital role at influencing his social behavior.

Weight control: dogs are also prone to get obese or overwight too. Just like humans, dogs are bound to gain a lot of weight when they are not monitored well. Don't be too busy to walk him, a lazy dog can be quite grumpy and hostile or feel threatened by the silliest things. So if you walk him, he burns enough calories thus bringing about weight loss that is required for his body.

Better mental well-being: If you regularly exercise you can bear witness that you feel much better after each session. This is because your body releases some kind of bad energy that hinders the improvement of your mental well-being. This is also applicable to your dog. When the dog exercises, he feels better about himself thus becoming a better companion and even a better security from unwanted guests.

More exposure: When you walk him you expose him to new things everyday. He gets to gain a new experience and familiarize himself with the environment outside your home.It also helps him to learn new things which are crucial for his growth and development.

Decrease loneliness: If you live alone it means that your dog spends most of his time alone too, or you smother him. Just like humans, dogs are also social beings. When you are walking him you give him company which aids in getting rid of loneliness and kills boredom. He gets enticed by the things he sees, hears and smells.

So, we have discussed why we need to walk our dogs now let's look at how to walk him.

While many people know that they need to walk their dogs, studies show that few dog owners know how to do it the right way. To help you in not making the same mistake, here is how to walk your dog.

Always keep him on a leash: When he is on a leash you have full control of the dog and you are the one who directs the walk. The best way to hold the leash is by wrapping it around your palm until there is little space between you and him.

Treat him: It's the recommendation of the experts that you train your dog while you walk him. Some of the training that you can expose him to include the likes of walking, sitting and when to pull on the leash. When he behaves the way you want it to, you should reward him for good behaviour.

Lastly, make sure you apply comfortable pressure on him while doing the walk. The time that you walk him determines how comfortable the dog will be. Don't walk him at the time of the day when he'd be grumpy and snappish. So, to be at peace with yourself for unexpected outcomes, don't walk him at noon as it will definetly be too hot for him and even you.
