Mortuary in flames, corpses burnt in Anambra

Hell was let loose yesterday at Enugwu Ukwu in Njikoka local government of Anambra State as the mortuary of the General Hospital in the community caught fire and burnt all the corpses in it.

Though there has not been official statement by the hospital, it was speculated that about 50 corpses were in the mortuary.

There great wailing as families that have their loved ones deposited there could not control their heartbreak as most of the corpses were burnt beyond recognition.

The high number of corpses involved might not be unconnected with rule in Anambra that no burials were allowed in the month of December.

Quite sad.
What could have caused this?

Though this may be true, Anambra people are also into unnecessary delay in burying their dead relatives.
One of such family from Oraifite left their mother's corpse in a mortuary for YEARS now.

Though this inferno is sad, it may teach the people to stop delaying burials often for cosmetic reasons -till they give "a befitting burial". Meanwhile while the dead person was alive, nobody cared about him or her. But once dead, money start coming out for burial.
This Anambra rule concerning burials during December month was inspired by this crazy "hoarding of corpses".
Our ancestors buried a dead person just 24 hours after death. Dr Dozie Ikedife who died recently followed exactly that principle and instructed his survivors to do the same, hence his quick burial.
Our ancestors believed that the greatest honor you can extend to a dead person is to bury the person fast.
But latter day churches are making it harder to do just that.
Sometimes when a person is buried fast like that the orthodox churches (Catholic and Anglican) will refuse to organize or participate in a rescheduled funeral ceremony.
Instead of lightening the burden of the people, these churches add to it.
If I were among policy makers in Anambra I would sponsor a law that forces all dead persons to be buried within 3 days of death.

Cause of fire unknown, it is a tough situation for those concerned. May God grant them fortitude to bear the loss.
