TONY JOHN, Port Harcourt

Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of 24 babies from a baby factory in Woji community, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the State.

The babies were between one and two years old. Also, four pregnant teenagers were nabbed at the suspected baby factory.
State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the development when he briefed journalists on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Dandaura.
Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP),  said the achievement was made possible with operatives of the Eagle Crack (E’Crack) Squad,  Mile 1 Divisional Police State.
He said the E-Crack operatives burst into child trafficking syndicate in Woji axis of Port Harcourt, where the recovery was made.
The PPRO  said the babies and the pregnant teenagers, who were frail and malnourished, were currently receiving medical attention at the police clinic.
The command’s spokesman added that  investigation had been launched with a view to making more recoveries and to bringing the masterminds to justice.
He  urged members of the to public to increase their security consciousness by reporting any suspicious movement to the police.
Also, he advised anyone with a report of a missing child to approach the command for identification and collection.
Reacting to the police’s claim, counsel for the  Managing Director of the suspected baby factory,  Eunice Uchendu, claimed that Tender Live Care-Giver which is being run by her client, is a registered organization working with Rivers State Government.
Uchendu described the position of the police as untrue, saying that her client  would wait for the outcome of the investigation to  know the next line of action.
Meanwhile, some of the pregnant teenagers have dismissed report from the police that they were paid to get pregnant and sale their babies.
The pregnant teenagers also denied being forced to stay at the centre, saying that they were there on the consent of their respective family members.
They also admitted that anyone, who chose to leave or go with the baby after delivery, did that willingly without any condition attached.

This story is tacky, and represents what you find in a typical underdeveloped country that Nigeria is.

The first thing I noticed is that the police did not do a thorough investigation before pouncing on these people.
This is what happens when police are not LOCAL. These policemen are not from the place.

These policemen are operating totally clueless to the mindset and culture of the people of that area.

I need to clarify...

In Eastern Nigeria (particularly the Igbo parts), teenage pregnancy is SERIOUSLY frowned upon these days, and pregnant teenagers are often "shooed" away by their family to some quiet place where they deliver the babies without anyone knowing.

This is, again, part of the cultural deviance we are experiencing these days.
Families would rather that a pregnant teen even died, than have her pregnant at home. FACT.  >:(

So, if there be a place where a teenager can go to stay while pregnant, and where she can, maybe, sign away into adoption such baby, A LOT of people would jump at it!

Don't get angry at those doing the "business" of housing and caring for these teenagers until they deliver.
Rather get angry at the new culture that kicks them out of their family homes just because they got pregnant.

Arrest parents who send their kids away from home on account of their getting pregnant!

This is part of why I lament the demise of our culture, and the fact that even religious leaders have ZERO answers to this problem.

If the police want to help society in this instance, perhaps they should focus on the proprietor or the owner of the "home" where these babies are born, to make sure that the babies are not sold off to people who would use them for evil deeds.
There are MANY childless couples out there. Nigeria does not make it easy for childless couples to adopt these types of children.
Our system seems designed for pains, sorrows, and tears, and there seems no hope in sight at all.

Meanwhile these teenagers should be left alone, or the police should return them to their family homes with a court order charging their parents to leave them at home till they deliver.  >:(

Our society is being destroyed by wickedness caused by alien cultures laced with religion which creates all types of problems in the land.
