Vitamin B12 is one of the essential vitamins for human health, it is found in  animal foods, including meats, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy. It can also be found in products fortified with B12, such as some varieties of bread and plant-based milk.

However, most people have Vitamin B12 deficiency and are not aware, the risk of this deficiency happens if you don’t get enough from your diet or aren’t able to absorb enough from the food eaten. Symptoms of this vitamin deficiency takes a while to show.

Below are some symptoms of Vitamin B12:

Weakness

Constant weakness in the body might be a sign of lack of Vitamin B12. They occur because your body doesn’t have enough vitamin B12 to make red blood cells, which transport oxygen throughout your body and this causes tiredness and weakness.

Glossits and Mouth Ulcers

If you have glossitis, your tongue changes color and shape, making it painful, red and swollen. The inflammation can also make your tongue look smooth, as all the tiny bumps on your tongue that contain your taste buds stretch out and disappear. Additionally, some people with a B12 deficiency may experience some oral symptoms, such as mouth ulcers, feelings of pins and needles in the tongue or a burning and itching sensation in the mouth.

Blurred Vision

Absence of Vitamin B12 may cause blurry and unclear vision. This is likely to happen when an untreated B12 deficiency results in nervous system damage to the optic nerve that leads to the eyes. However, this can be resolved when the supplements for this vitamin is used as recommended by a physician.

Mood switch

People with Vitamin B12 deficiency might experience constant mood change that might affect their everyday activities. According to research, low Vitamin B12 deficiency might cause depression and dementia. However, there are diverse causes of depression and deficiency, it is better to be diagnosed by a medical practitioner.
