Christopher Oji

The Lagos State Police command has arrested a 50-year -old man,  Oyenma,  for allegedly beating his wife to death.

But in  a swift reaction, Onyema, who denied the allegation, told Daily Sun that  his wife died as a result of heart attack.

The deceased, Esther Onyema, who was  the proprietor of Brilliant kids Nursery and Primary school, according to the police died after she was  allegedly  brutalised by her husband.

A senior police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity as he was not supposed to speak with the press, alleged  that medical report showed that Esther  died as a result of the injuries she sustained during the numerous beating she suffered in the hands of her husband.

But the suspect in his confessional statement denied beating his wife on the fateful  day that  she died.

“We have been having problems for sometime. She moved out of the house simply because I had no money. She went to stay with Pastor Friday. I suspect that she is having an affairs with the pastor.

“Before the unfortunate incident occurred, I came back from work sometime in January this year only to find out from my children that their mother had left the house. It was Pastor Friday that scattered my home.

“For three days I was looking for her ,but on the fourth day, I discovered that she had moved in to stay with the pastor. When I went there I saw her wearing only wrapper while the pastor was wearing only boxers.”

“When I tried to confront her, Pastor Friday  gave me the beating of my life. He  said I should leave his house. Before I knew what was happening, he had  wrestled me to the ground.

“All attempts  I made to ensure that she returned to the house were rebuffed. On January 16, I went to her school located at Ladi-Lak, Bariga area of Lagos, only to find her standing by the gate.”

It is an established fact that the man beat his wife and inflicted injuries on her.

Next, we look at the other information volunteered by the suspect.

It is also a fact (as volunteered by the man), that the couple had problems which may have arisen out of the man's poverty, and which led to the wife leaving to go and stay with her pastor.

The question then becomes, if poverty is the problem, WHY would his wife go to live with her pastor?
Is the pastor father Christmas who gives out money freely?
My immediate guess is that money was NOT why this woman went to stay with her pastor.
She was likely running for her dear life and thought of the pastor's residence as a place of refuge.
Maybe she had no family in Lagos, so she went to stay with her pastor, until a more permanent solution is found.

I say this because the pastor didn't buckle when the man accused him of sleeping with his wife. He instead beat the living daylight out of the man. That smells like a man who was indignant at a wife-beating husband.

BUT ... I ALWAYS worry when a woman goes to spend the night with her pastor. I would have preferred that this women went to stay with a fellow woman, but I don't know her circumstance and therefore can't say for sure.

My concern is that pastors these days tend to be predatory -a lot. However, that doesn't mean that there are no good pastors left in the service of God. There are still good pastors, but they are few and far in between.

This woman is dead, and we cannot know the whole story now.

But this man should not be allowed to go Scott free without some jail term, because he committed manslaughter (or at least culpable homicide).

If he suspected that his wife could no longer stay with him due to his poverty, the only acceptable option is to DIVORCE her.
Beating her is UNACCEPTABLE!
