Operatives of police in Imo State have arrested a 44 year -old- man, Chimnonso Okonkwo, who resides in Orji, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State, for allegedly having sex with his 15-year-old daughter.

Okonkwo was also accused of inviting his friends to have sex with his daughter.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in the state, Orlando Godson Ikeokwu, said the Okonkwo was arrested after the police received credible information.

Ikeokwu said Okonkwo has been detained after confessing to the crime.

“It is noteworthy, that it wasn’t the first time this is happening, and that he normally invites his friends who come to his house to have canal knowledge of his own daughter,” Ikeokwu said in a statement on Tuesday.

“He has been detained, while investigation into the incident has commenced.”

The PPRO said that the culprit’s wife was not involved in the matter.

Firstly, this would have been posted on the Crime section of this site, but it has FAMILY and CULTURE angles to it.
We may have to post a copy of it to those other sections.

The topic has been posted to this Family section because while growing up, I used to hear stories ( what I thought were fables really) about this sort of a thing -though not exactly this kind where a man is essentially "pimping" his own daughter.

It was more like, in Owerri, if you didn't look in the way of the females in a landlord's household, and went elsewhere for your sexual needs, you lost favour with the landlord, and risked eviction because he believed you didn't love his household.

Disclaimer: I NEVER saw any real life proof of that fable, which is why I still refer to it as fable.

Dunno, this might be a weird extension of the said culture/practice...

However, this man crossed a line when he started using a statutory child to do this.

This sort of a practice should NOT involve children (or any dependant for that matter) who can't make enforceable decisions for themselves, even if it were cultural, or a residue of an earlier culture.

Children/dependants should be protected by law at all times.

As for the incest part of it, that is where this man proved that his real intention is devious.

He not only slept with his own child, he pimped her, too. Such a practice is evil on every level.

In civilized world, this child would be removed from that house by government, i.e. after this man must have been sentenced to proper jail terms.  I hope that is what will happen in this case!

If you are from Owerri or know that part very well, you are invited to set the records straight here on this practice I alluded to above.
In Igbo, we say that "ogbara nkiti kwere ekwe" ("your silence is your acceptance").
So if you keep quiet, this story may well prove that the fable is true.

BTW I still refer readers to THIS THREAD were I discussed in great detail factors and issues that lead to the explosion of incest in Nigeria, particularly Igboland.

The solution is CULTURAL though with a little religious twist, and is very easy to implement.
