Residents of Awka in Anambra State on Monday evening rescued a 26-year old mother of one who dropped a suicide note threatening to kill herself and her son because she was constantly being beaten by her husband.

The woman, Praise Eberechi Eze, who is said to be a serving corp member, had posted on her Facebook account saying she would kill herself and her two-year-old son so she can go to a place where she can find peace.

Narrating her ordeal on her Facebook timeline, Eberechi had earlier written in April this year, “We live in a society where no one cares. You live in an abusive marriage, no one care. Society, friends and relatives.

“They tell you to pray and endure while the assault is on the increase. You pack home and they tell you to go back and make your family work. Verbal abuse increase, you are called bad wife, bastard, you smell awful, you feel you made a 2.1 in school, come and get money for clearance.

“When family fails you because you are married, you damn the consequence, take a life and serve the jail term.”

On Monday morning, Eberechi reportedly dropped a suicide note which read, “Soon I will die, and will take my little man along. I won’t leave him to the suffering of verbal abuse, we will go to a place where there is peace unlimited. When I die, don’t write an epistle for me. When I die, I should be buried in my father’s house to avoid havoc. When I die, don’t cry, cos all is well in life and death.”

THISDAY learnt that she deleted the post minutes after, triggering fears that she may have gone away to harm herself, but refused to answer calls from friends.

Facebook users who had earlier made screenshots of her post sent it out, asking for help for her, until late Monday night when she was tracked to a primary health centre in Okpuno in Awka, where some residents who rescued her had taken her for treatment.

A Facebook user, Cynthia Raphaels, who first spread the post stated in a subsequent post that she had been tracked down to the health centre, and had detailed two female volunteers to keep an eye on her.

As at the time of filling this report, she had been rescued and taken to the ‘B’ division police station, where she made entry, and had also been moved to a temporary residence as she refused to return to her husband.

Firstly, and perhaps the most important thing to worry most about, is the fact that this woman planned to kill her two year old innocent child as part of her own suicide.
THAT IS A NEW AND FRIGHTENING EVIL encroaching into that part of the world.
Suicide is not a new thing in Igboland. Killing your child as part of your own suicide is, and that has totally inured me to the sympathy I would have had for this woman.  >:(

I don't know why our people feel that anything they see abroad must be copied.
It is very annoying and depressing. >:(

Wife abuse is one of those crimes that society should continue to fight, and again, I dare say that incidence of wife abuse is not new, but a wife traditionally (before now) could simply go back home to her parents home if she is having problems in her marriage. It was no big a deal.

But with the marriage and religious extremism of today, that path has been constantly attacked and made to look like a taboo. Since when did it become a taboo for a woman to return to her own father's house?
Is marriage now by force once money (pun intended) has exchanged hands?

Tufiakwa! Si kwa nu ntiki zuo na afia udene!  >:(

All of these abominable tendencies: wife beating, woman's own family rejecting her return once married, killing of innocent children as part of suicide, and all the wickedness that is multiplying in Igboland today, should be rejected.

It is time we ask ourselves whether this family and marriage system is better than what our ancestors bequeathed to us.

A stitch in time saves nine.

Meanwhile the government should take away this innocent child from this suicidal woman until she gets the mental health treatment she needs.

This is not a case of just giving her temporary protective custody. She needs complete mental treatment as well.
And the son needs to be sent to where he can grow in safety.

Meanwhile the abusive husband should be tracked down and made to pay to the last kobo every money spent on taking care of the innocent boy.

The state should also see a way to break up this crazy marriage before someone kills someone.
