A total of 106, 202 candidates representing 61.5 percent of the 172,669 those whose results were released in the 2016 October/November West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) failed to obtain five credits including English Language and Mathematics.

The Head of Nigerian Office of West African Examination Council (WAEC) Olu Adenipekun, made the announcement at a press briefing in Lagos yesterday.

According to Adenipekun, 66,497 candidates, representing 38.5 percent of those who had their results released, obtained five credits including English Language and Mathematics.

“The percentage of candidates that obtained five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics in the WASSCE for private candidates in 2014 and 2015 was  29.37 percent and 20.59 percent respectively. In comparison, this year performance is still an improvement when compared with results from the two previous years although this can still be better,” Adenipekun said.

He added that 13,488 representing 7.81 percent of the results were being withheld in connection with various cases of examination malpractices.

“The cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the council in due course for consideration. The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates thereafter,” he said.

Even a marginal improvement is still welcome

There was a little improvement this year, definitely next year is going to improve more than this and in regards to their plan of doing the exam twice in a year, starting from next year.
