Use social media to create jobs, NCC urges youths

By GideonOctober 03, 2017, 01:14:20 AM
The Nigerian Communications Commission has advised youths to use social media as a tool for job creation in order to reduce unemployment.

The Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, gave this charge in Calabar, Cross River State, during the commencement of a two-day workshop on Information and Communication Technology utilisation and sustainability for South-South zone.

The workshop, which was organised by the Universal Service Provision Fund, a unit under the NCC, had as its theme: Information and Communication Technology engagement through knowledge-based development.

Danbatta, who was represented by the Head of Strategy, USPF, Mr. Kelechi Nwakwo, said unemployed youths could take advantage of the social media to create platforms for marketing of products, among others.

He said, “There are several things people could do by using the social media to generate a lot of money. Advertisement on Goggle is much more than any media company in Nigeria can think of. That is basically why we are doing this workshop to build capacity for young Nigerians to be involved in the ICT.

“Not just for social media events, but as a tool for business and to make money and grow the national economy. We will be building capacity for people on how to develop application that they can use for profitable business.”

Danbatta also said the NCC was working hard with the Office of the National Security Adviser to curb the use of hate speeches in the social media.

He, however, noted that it was more interested in giving out information for people to make informed decision.

He said the NCC would ensure that the cyberspace was sanitised in order not to endanger the peace of the country.

He said, “There is a cybercrime law, which is being operated between the NCC and the office of the national security adviser, which is being managed by the latter. There are several things people want but if they are not in the law or in the Act, there is nothing one can do.

“We need to make sure that people get information; but in doing that, people need self-regulation for social media activities.  People should be mindful of what they post; there should be no hate speech; and then they should take responsibilities for what they are putting in the net.”

Danbatta explained that the commission was currently implementing an eight-point agenda with the strategic vision of 2015-2020, which included promoting innovation, investment, competition and consumer empowerment “in and on top of the communications platforms of today and the future.”

He said the workshop would afford participants the opportunity of interacting with the USPF in identifying sustainable solutions for two key projects, which he identified as the Community Resource Centre and School Knowledge Centre.

The Secretary of the USPF, Mr. Ayuba Shuaibu, stressed that the intention of the programme was to provide universal access to information and communication services in unserved areas and community links.

NCC is right!... Youths should make good use of social media to get a job or advertise their skills or potentials to would be employers rather than wasting it on posting hate speeches.
