FG shouldn’t negotiate minimum wage for states, LGs — Afenifere

By GideonDecember 07, 2017, 01:11:29 AM
The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, has called on the Federal Government not to negotiate the proposed new minimum wage with the state and local governments, saying the negotiation should be restricted only to the Federal Government’s workers.

The group stated that the FG should negotiate with its own workers and allow the states and local governments to negotiate with theirs to enable each tier of the government to pay its workers according to its capacity.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the monthly meeting of the group, held at the residence of its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The communiqué was read by the Publicity Secretary of the association, Mr. Yinka Odumakin.

The group stated, “It is right that the FG has put up a committee to negotiate a minimum wage for the workers but we see a problem here. This whole of unitary stance that we are maintaining by putting wages in the exclusive list that only the FG  can negotiate on it, will create its own problems because the FG will negotiate for the federal workers as well as state and LG workers whereas it is different tiers that will pay their wages, there will be different problems.

“We are saying in order to avoid this, the FG should negotiate for its own workers and let the state and the LG do same with their own workers; until this is done some states will underpay their own workers.”

On the case of Nigerians stranded in Libya, the Afenifere expressed displeasure over the alleged silence of the Federal Government on the development, saying it was improper for the government to take the welfare of the citizens with levity.

The group said, “We are disturbed that there have not been sufficient response from the Federal Government on the humiliation of our citizens abroad the way it should have been done. This is not acceptable while we call on the Federal Government to step up and behave in a more responsive manner to the plight of our citizens abroad and explore all the diplomatic channels to protect their dignity.”

It attributed the plight of the citizens in Libya to the economic crisis in the country in the last few years. To this end, the Afenifere called on the government to embrace true federalism to address the economic challenges facing the country.

“We must restructure this country to create a proper country where our citizens can flourish, where our enterprise can grow, where our citizens will become human capital and there will be productivity in our land,” the group stressed.

I agree with the group. Many states are trying to meet up with the current wage and it might be worse in a situation where wages are been reviewed upwards as been canvass by Nlc. Each states should embark on internal negotiations with workers.
